A convergence of trends in the tech labor market is giving hope to the idea that the playing field can be leveled for two key groups fighting for access and awareness:

  • Overlooked candidate groups who have historically been denied access to the high-growth tech space.
  • High-growth scaleups that are largely unknown and being devoured by Big Tech’s dominance over the sales, marketing, and engineering talent pools.

The trends:

Capital: The tech industry is flooded with VC money and companies need to hire skilled workers at scale. Supply and demand favor the candidate market.

Remote work: Tech companies can now source talent anywhere. No longer do you need to live in a tech hub to be hired by a tech hub company.

Salary increases: If you build and/or design software, starting with a six-figure salary out of the gate is officially a reality. You can leapfrog your peers at any stage in your career and provide you and your family with a comfortable and flexible life.

Skill acquisition: IMO, this is the game-changer. The ability to acquire high-demand skills—virtually ungated—is accessible to anyone with the desire and drive to learn.

  • On-demand education: Affordable bootcamp's and free online courses can fast-track learning on your own time and without the baggage of a fancy degree.
  • Communities: You can learn to sell, market, design, and build products better than some (most?) in-house leaders by immersing yourself in the right communities.
